What this site is

The Toronto Home Water Guide explains the water and plumbing questions Toronto homeowners run into: tap water and hardness, softeners and filters, lead and older pipe materials, basement flooding and the City's subsidy program, frozen pipes and other winter problems, water heaters, permits and costs. Every guide is listed on the all guides page, and short answers are on the FAQ.

The pages are written by the guide's editors. The byline on each page reads "By the Toronto Home Water Guide editors"; no page claims a named expert or personal experience it does not have.

What this site is not

This site is a homeowner information guide. It is not a plumbing company. It does not install, repair, quote, book or sell anything, and it has no connection to any plumber, contractor or rental company. It does not rank or recommend firms and it carries no advertising. It shares owners with SoftPro Water Systems, a US water treatment store, and a few water treatment pages link to that store's products, with a note beside every link; the ownership disclosure explains where and why.

This web address was once used by a contracting business. That business has nothing to do with this guide, and the guide does not speak for it.

How we research the pages

Each guide is built from primary sources: City of Toronto pages, reports and by-laws; Ontario laws and the Ontario Building Code; Health Canada and other federal departments; and regulators such as the Technical Standards and Safety Authority and Skilled Trades Ontario. Where a maker's manual or a company's own published terms is the only record of a fact, such as a rental buyout table, the page names that company as the source of its own terms. Contractor blogs, forums and retailer pages are not used as sources.

Every figure links to the page it came from, and each guide ends with a note on what it is based on and what was left out.

How we keep pages current

Each page shows the date it was last updated, and amounts are dated with the source's own date. The guides were checked against their sources in October 2026. When the City changes a program, as it did with the flooding subsidy in 2026, the affected guides are revised.

How we handle costs and prices

Cost figures come only from public sources: City subsidy caps, permit and licence fees, City staff reports, and published terms. Where no public source gives a price, the guide explains what drives the cost and what a written, itemized quote should list, instead of printing a range. No figure on this site is a quote. For health questions, speak with Toronto Public Health or your doctor; for work on your home, hire a licensed professional.
